to the day ten years ago, a tiny little record store in delft opened its doors. graduating from a university study in urban planning was one thing, being stuck in airless conference rooms was a step too far. so why not start a record store; a record label; organise events, and make a promise to quit when it stopped being fun and began looking like work. well, ten years after, it's still not near a normal shop. so here's to henk who shared the passion and helped me in the first four and a half years in delft. cheers!

one of tonefloat's major projects in its anniversary year is a five album 'once we all walk through solid objects'. the set collects 10 original and brand new fear falls burning pieces, reconstructed by renowned experimental artists. each and every contribution makes up a full vinyl record album side. the project promises to be a landmark tonefloat release with truly prolific artwork.

all contributions are now finished, and show the wide context of the music of fear falls burning. not only by the origins of the musicians, from postrock to industrial, but also by the way the original material was treated. not only by reworking their way, but also by adding scapes, tools and instruments. we're please to give you the complete tracklisting. more details on 'once we all walk through solid objects' will be announced on the tonefloat news page, early 2007.

a week jampacked with gigs. starting off last thursday with an impressive george michael at the ahoy' in rotterdam, followed by a more intimate setting at the boerderij in zoetermeer for a gig with paatos and lo ego. stefan from paatos brought some paatos vinyl in return for the discs i gave him last month while on tour with porcupine tree. special guests lo ego were quite impressive. good songs, good band. theo travis (who's slow life i will release on vinyl in january) happened to be in amsterdam for a three day stint with gong at their gong family unconvention. watched him play with two bands and had dinner. lotsa plans for the future. tonight will be the forth and final gig of the week when i am going to see keane, again at the ahoy', thanks to an invitation from sander.

back in london after over three months. went to see david gilmour in manchester. uncle dave was in top shape. stayed overnight at the somewhat strange luther king house in m14 with glenn. we drove to bucks round noon the day after and had lunch with richard. arrived in london at 6pm. nice hotel just off the royal albert hall. had a very relaxing and pleasant evening.

with their 2000 marque show in nijmegen in the back of my head as one of the greatest gigs i ever saw (sigur ros was doing support for that one), radiohead returned to my daily schedule with a rambling yet impressive two hour show last night at the heineken music hall in amsterdam. a beautiful mixture of those songs known, hardly known and new, the band proved to be still in charge when it comes to writing excellent songs and playing them accordingly. tonight up for a second show with a different setlist.

good news last night when john mailed me concerning an upcoming gig in a small theatre in norwich called the garage, which hosts a gig with tim bowness (of no-man fame), ben coleman (ditto), steven wilson (ditto), alongside michael bearpark and peter chilvers who both appear on no-man's together we're stranger. it's been announced that steven will be doing a solo gig, but a nice setting it is anyway. looking forward to this one. it's 16th june.

not as if nothing happened, a month plus passed since 12 march. where do i start? well. went to see another 3 gilmour gigs which were a lot more enjoyable than the first one. frankfurt was perfect, and the amsterdam shows turned out to be a big meet and greet with friends from past, present and future. i must, however, confess that i'm starting to run out of bandwith when it comes to floyd music. i could do without breathe and time for a few years. with no releases for the spring except a tour lp for fear falls burning, things were relatively calm on the tonefloat front. the lp was ready right in time for the european tour. went to see two gigs, one in belgium, one in eindhoven at the dynamo. both were very enjoyable. the first tidal wave of things happening is coming to a close with the annual floyd convention next sunday in zoetermeer. things are running and with two new bands, i'm looking forward to see them playing.

dortmund, march 10. kick off of david gilmour's short tour around smaller venues in europe. with the superb royal festival hall shows from 2001/2 in mind, i realised that things couldn't get much better. and they didn't. gone were the intimate and musically richer arrangements with a nine piece choir, a cello, and a greater touch of reality. gilmour was again playing his former floyd cards in a smaller setting. not bad, but a few steps down from his former shows in which he proved he didn't need floyd's bombastic approach. echoes was a great surprise but stroboscopes in a konzerthaus? a bit over the top in my opinion. dominoes, shine on, wish you were here, high hopes, comfortably numb. all played before four years ago, and better also, i'm sorry to say. the choice for a full rendition of his new album can only be treated with respect, but i'm still waiting for other songs from his beside the floyd back catalogue. on the other hand, as said, echoes was a welcome surprise as was wot's uh the deal. and phil manzanera proved to be a superb choice.

march is busy as usual. with four releases and a reissue done in february, it's time for other things ... such as ehhm a new release. fear falls burning and tonefloat are working on a joint release in tie with the band's upcoming spring tour. some things require only little discussion and this project was such a thing. cover's ready, master's cut and more soon. the floydish part of crazy diamond will be playing a major role in the next few weeks. the four gilmour gigs in march are more of a private kind but provide necessary promotion opportunities for the floyd convention in may. we've received a lot of help from a variety of contacts in order to promote this event. check out our special site for details (in dutch).

last monday was destined to be a hectic day. with two releases (ghosts and speak) to pick up from the pressing plant, and many many pre-orders to be shipped that same day, things had to be planned in order to work. who else could have gotten in the way but emi. a rush repress order for dark side meant i spent over two hours extra with the friendly people of record industry, waiting for the tonefloat releases to be sealed. finally got back to the office at four, leaving only a mere two hours to get things done. it worked and europeans will have their records in by now.

a ninety minute drive got me to the ancient centre of gent (belgium) where i saw the hermes ensemble perform an eclectic set of partly reworked pink floyd compositions at de bijloke. i'd seen them before at the palais des beaux arts in brussels, in september 2004. as before, they brought interesting performances of atom heart mother and a saucerful of secrets, as well as some nifty and partly reconstructed works based on a variety of more experimental floyd tunes.

tonefloat's first full length album was firetree by the use of ashes. a 1996 cd on the italy based mellow records, the original album was expanded for tonefloat with the four part under the black sun suite on side 4. in 1998 the 2lp was pressed in a very limited edition of 100 copies only and sold out within weeks. had many requests for the album since 1998 and it's good to see the interest is still there. the psychout label, again from italy, made a request to reissue firetree - and the band has agreed. under the black sun will remain exclusive to the tonefloat release and will be replaced by previously unreleased outtakes from the early '90s firetree sessions. the release, again in a limited edition of 300 copies, is scheduled for june.

picked up tfc104 and tfc105 from the record plant. pre-orders were shipped right on time, yesterday afternoon. again they have been pressed on clear vinyl, this time 180gms vinyl. the second and most likely final pressing of steven wilson's unreleased electronic music also came out yesterday. it's the first repress of a vinyl release on tonefloat, soon to be followed by no-man's together we're stranger.

met up with dirk from fear falls burning / vidnaobmana last night to bring him his c contribution and had a very pleasant evening. lots of exciting plans ahead.

out to see guapo at waterfront. nice band but not really my cup of tea. a bit too much of a contrast chord change kind of thing and a bit short on memorable melodies. venue was very nice, and could be suitable for an event in the future.

both test pressings for the upcoming c releases have been given the artist’s approval. had a listen myself following the receipt of the tests this monday to find out that they have been beautifully mastered and cut at the plant. will give green light for the release tomorrow, so all should be ready by january 31st.

finally got myself into gear for the handmade c sleeves. the actual sleeves are the easy part. they have been cut to a size of 31.5cm x 63cm and have subsequently been folded. the real work starts with the cards.the lettering has been composed with a printing kit.

texts have been set by hand. very pleased to hear theo travis was going to use eleven bowls of acidophilus flute salad as a title. for both upcoming releases, three sets of texts will be used and stamped. the first text informs on artist and title, the second one is the catalogue number and the third and final one is information on the printing.

once the 10cm x 15cm handmade cards have been stamped i'm off to another place to have the cards lacquered. for the first three c releases, i got help from maarten and carro, but decided to handle it myself this time, as the smell of the heated lacquer is by all means awful and most likely very toxic. applied all the lacquer for the fear falls burning release and will be trying to finish the theo travis one as well as the second printing of mousehill daydream this week. it's not the pleasantest of jobs but the feedback on the results has been good. makes it all worth while.

today's inbox includes the first two corrections send in by christopher c. he's going to revise most of the english texts sued on tonefloat. christopher is a native speaker so his help is much appreciated. translating dutch into english is one thing, writing english is another. as a result, he also took the task of revising the original english written review of the 2000 tonefloating show in delft.

picked up aerial from the wholesaler. the kate bush album. the vinyl edition, that is. 180 grammes vinyl. innerbags. booklet. gatefold sleeve with wide spine. ten out of ten. a classic vinyl release. let's hope it goes as a blueprint for the upcoming david gilmour double vinyl album that was announced this week.

a tough day when it comes to aiming to keep my inbox clean. multiple bookings for planes, trains and hotels to get travels for the uk leg of david gilmour's may tour, well sorted out before noon. actually booked a hotel by phone today. thought that'd never happen anymore in 2006. it did. and it worked.
re-registered lowlandsparadise.com today, after i'd forgot to renew that last year. a site used as portal for my lowlands page on floydstuff which i use for an ongoing and possibly neverending research for pink floyd gigs in the netherlands. 2007 sees the 40th anniversary of the first gig in holland, so it's a kind of last chance to get things off the ground this year. or not.
also announced pre-sales for the upcoming tonefloat and c releases, which usually attracts a lot of mails and questions. doing it this way is an absolute must to get things working and making it possible to have all orders out as soon as the discs have cooled down from the pressing plant. inbox is down to 28 now which means i can see all on my screen.

some good news for those into coloured vinyl. it wasn't possible to have our records in multi-coloured vinyl because of quality restrictions. our record plant is a company that puts quality first and was not impressed by the previously available multi-coloured vinyl which used to be mixed at the moment of pressing. we can now have our records pressed in flamed multi-coloured vinyl in the same high quality standard we and you have become used to. c releases will remain on clear vinyl, but tonefloat first pressings only will issued in flamed multi-coloured vinyl. tf23 and tf24 will be the first ones to have this special treatment.

a very fruitful email correspondence this morning with vidna obmana's dirk serries about a vinyl compendium to the vidna obmana vs bass communion continuum cd, which was originally released in march 05 by the u.s. soleilmoon label. four 19-minute recyclings, based on the original material, are scheduled for release as a 2lp later this year on tonefloat.

uploaded the new design for tonefloat.com, which goes very well with the lay-out of this log. one should say the log goes very well with the site, but it's the design for this log that inspired a much needed overhaul for the site.

spoke to peter about a possible recording session outside his continuing work for the use of ashes. nothing confirmed yet, and with several pros and cons we'll see where it ends.

it looks like a shop but it's paradise. they say it, and they're absolutely right. harolds is the country's finest store when it comes to paper, art supplies, and stuff like that. most of the elements that make up the well received c cover designs come from this shop in the centre of rotterdam. spent some time this afternoon to select sources for the upcoming c releases by fear falls burning and theo travis. the actual cover paper comes from a different paper supplier who has structured and thicker paper. i need at least 250 grammes for a sturdy cover.

this log uses georgia, a font i discovered back in 2004 when working on a poster for the blackfield gig at the boerderij in zoetermeer. the font had originally been used by lasse hoile for his blackfield artwork. the font solves the problem i have with the use of capitals and numbers. they simply don't fit in with text as i like to see it. with a small cap use of numbers, i can now do without any caps. spent most of xmas 2005 (see how nice it works!) working on a new version of www.tonefloat.com based on a text dominated design featuring georgia. the new site is to be launched in the first week of january 2006.

ready at ten for a usually less than pleasant stay behind the pc to grab some online david gilmour tickets from the royal albert hall site. following a five minute crash, it was announced that the box office was only going to sell tickets by phone and not online. checked another site and got tickets in the end, but up high in the sky, in this particular case the circles. with tickets for the opening show in dortmund, frankfurt, amsterdam, and a set of three for the closing shows in london, i can only hope that the concerts will be as intimate and entertaining as four years back.
